St. Anne's Guest Home, has been a mission in our Province since1945 when the Sisters operated a small diocesan home for the aged, which could accommodate up to 20 men at most. The operation was moved to Grand Forks in 1952, where the Sisters converted the old St. Michael's Hospital into a home able to care for over one hundred residents. In 1981 they came to the present address on North 17th Street when the older buildings of the facility on the banks of the Red River could no longer meet safety codes. From the beginning the Sisters' mission has been to create community with those they are serving, thereby living the Gospel out in a very visible way for the local Church. St. Anne's Guest Home is a residence for those capable of independent living, although many support systems are available. The Sisters, with the help of many volunteers and dedicated lay staff, have been meeting their goal of living a Gospel-Community for over 50 years. Sister Arnoldine was the first administrator of the home, being responsible for getting the home started, remodeled, and above all, seeing that the guests felt happy and at home. By the summer of 1957 the number of guests had reached 115. Just before celebrating their 25th Anniversary in 1977, word was received that the lovely old building had to be closed due to revised state safety codes. "The Friends of St. Anne's" from the three Catholic parishes of Grand Forks, our Provincial Administration, under the direction of Sister Mary Louise Jundt, and Sister Rebecca Metzger (the administrator, then and now) were determined to develop a future for St. Anne's Guest Home. The building housing St. James Religious Education Center was purchased and remodeling was begun. Over the next 25 years the Sisters would cope with many challenges, including two major floods, the first one in 1979 when they were in transition between the old and the new St. Anne's, and the second in 1997 when the entire city of Grand Forks was evacuated, scattering residents and staff into seven states. |
