Bishop
Samuel Aquila announces changes for parishes and Catholic schools In a pastoral letter issued today, Most Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo, announced several changes for parishes and Catholic schools in the metro area of Fargo, West Fargo, Horace and Kindred and the diocese as a whole. The announcement is the culmination of a year-long review and consultation process initiated in April 2010. The first decision related to the review – the relocation of Holy Cross parish in West Fargo to a new site and the addition of a Catholic school at that site – was announced April 27. Several other decisions are outlined in the pastoral letter. Read the full pastoral letter here.
Bishop Aquila announces the first of several decisions regarding parishes and
Catholic schools in West Fargo, Fargo and Horace In a letter mailed Tuesday, April 26, to parishioners of Holy Cross Catholic Church in West Fargo, Most Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo, announced the first of several decisions related to a year-long review of parishes and Catholic schools in West Fargo, Fargo and Horace. Holy Cross Parish will be relocated to undeveloped land that is west of Veterans Boulevard in West Fargo and south of I-94. The church is presently located on approximately 6.5 acres of land at 1420 16th St. E., West Fargo. Approximately 14 acres of land, bordered by 26th Avenue East to the north, 7th Street East to the west, and Bluestem Drive to the east, is available for construction of the new Holy Cross Church. “A dual purpose Catholic school and Religious Education Formation facility will also be built on the property,” the letter stated. This was not possible on the present site due to parking limitations and traffic flow for a school. Read the full press release. Read the letter and question/answer sheet.
Clergy and faithful discuss the future of the seminary
buildings and land On Saturday, March 26, a meeting for clergy, religious and the laity was held at Sts. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church, Fargo, to gather input on the proposal for Cardinal Muench Seminary. Several ideas for use of the seminary facility and property had already been submitted to the diocese through letters and the website comment form. They were included in the March 11 proposal and discussed at the meeting. Read the full report of the meeting.
Bishop Samuel Aquila announces proposal for Cardinal
Muench Seminary buildings and land In an email sent today to priests, staff and others, Most Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo, shared a proposal for the Cardinal Muench Seminary buildings and land in Fargo. He proposes that the diocese "offer for sale the seminary buildings and land to any interested religious or secular institution for use of their own choosing, provided this use is consistent with Catholic principles." The proposal also notes that, "The sale would not occur for at least one year during which time the property will be vacated and the library relocated." Read the rest of the
press release.
Decision to be announced in May
regarding proposal for parishes and schools In January, Bishop Samuel Aquila announced a Proposal for Parishes and Schools in Fargo, West Fargo and Horace and engaged in a process of consultation on aspects of the proposal. Included in the proposal were a cluster of St. Anthony of Padua parish with St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo, a merger of Blessed Sacrament Church with Holy Cross Church in West Fargo, a relocation of St. Benedict’s parish to undeveloped property at County Road 17 and 64th Ave. S. in Horace, the refinement of parish boundaries and the addition of two new Catholic elementary schools. The first consultation meetings for the faithful were held Feb. 1, 3 and 5. The goal of the meetings was to clarify the proposal. The second group of meetings for the faithful, which provided an opportunity for their assessment of the proposal, were held on Feb. 15, 17 and 19. On Feb. 23, the priests of the metro area met with Bishop Aquila at the Pastoral Center. Like the faithful who attended the assessment meetings the previous week, the priests provided input on the proposal using the categories of benefits, concerns and ideas for improvement. A summary of input from these four assessment meetings can be found below and is entitled Consultation Meetings Summary. Bishop Aquila is now reviewing the input provided through the meetings, personal letters, emails, and the comments form on the diocesan webpage, and continues to pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit, in preparation for the announcement of his decision in May.

and During a meeting with priests this morning, Most Rev. Samuel J. A review of goals; a request for feedback Information shared through parish bulletins and the diocesan newspaper in the past two months addressed why and how the parish, seminary and school review is being conducted in the metro area of Fargo, West Fargo, Horace and Kindred and what is being learned from the research. The information being shared today reviews the reasons for this study and explains how you can provide input to assist Bishop Samuel Aquila in the decision making process. Read more here.
What are we learning from the
information gathered so far? Information shared in October regarding the Parish, Seminary and School Review addressed why and how the review is being done. This month we will address a few of the things we are learning from the information that is being gathered.
Numerous ideas proposed for
future use of seminary facility During an Oct. 25 meeting of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, representatives from each of the eight deaneries (or regions) of the Diocese of Fargo presented ideas for the future use of the Cardinal Muench Seminary facility.
Shifts in demographics and
development prompt review In April 2010, Bishop Samuel Aquila announced that the seminary program at Cardinal Muench Seminary in Fargo would be discontinued at the end of the 2010-2011 academic year due to the high cost of education and low enrollment. The loss of the seminary program is difficult for past and current seminarians and the many people who have supported the seminary throughout the years. CMS played a vital role in the history of the diocese and we are thankful to God for the gift it has been. This change, however, as with every change God places before us, provides an opportunity. Today we are called to look at the seminary property through a new lens, and to ask the question: How can the seminary facility best serve the faithful of the diocese in the future? There is also a need to review how the Catholic churches and schools in the Fargo metro area (Fargo, West Fargo, Horace and Kindred) should respond to changing demographics. Everyone who has lived in these communities in the past few years has seen the dramatic growth that has taken place, primarily to the south and west of Fargo. We must look at how we can effectively carry out the mission of the Church in light of these changes in our communities. Read more here.
