David Bereit, national director, and
Shawn Carney, board member, of the national 40 Days for Life
campaign, led a rally in front of North Dakota’s only abortion
facility on Tuesday, June 24, to raise awareness of the tragedy of
abortion in North Dakota. According to the state’s abortion
statistics, 20 or more unborn children are killed by abortion each
week in Fargo. |
| Speaking on the sidewalk in front of
the Red River Women's Clinic in Fargo, Carney told of the power of
prayer and the urgent need for prayer in front of abortion
facilities across the nation. “Abortion has a sense of urgency that
forces us to our knees,” he said.
In 2004, Carney, who is
executive director of the Coalition for Life in Texas, worked with
Bereit and others to organize the first 40 Days for Life campaign.
40 Days for Life is an ecumenical effort of prayer, fasting,
outreach and peaceful vigils outside abortion facilities which is
focused on bringing an end to the killing of unborn children through
abortion in the United States. In the fall of 2007, the campaign was
embraced nationally, with 89 cities in 33 states conducting 40 Days
for Life campaigns. During Lent 2008, another 50 cities held 40-day
prayer vigils. The fall 2008 campaign will begin Sept. 24, with
North Dakota being one of the participating states for the second
year in a row.
Noting that North Dakota has
only one abortion facility, Carney told the crowd gathered for the
rally, “North Dakota has a unique situation in that closing this
clinic forever means…three words – ‘abortion-free state’.” He said
he has “great hope in the little slab of concrete that we now stand
on” that what happens due to prayer on the sidewalk outside the
Fargo abortion facility “will literally change the world.”

Men suffer from abortion, too
The July issue of Columbia magazine,
published by the Knights of Columbus, includes a special report on men and
abortion. The online edition of Columbia includes an
interview with Vincent Rue, Ph.D., director of the Institute for
Pregnancy Loss in Jacksonville, Fla.
In the interview, Dr. Rue tells how
Catholics and the Knights of Columbus can play a role in promoting ministry
to men and women affected by abortion. He notes, “As Catholics we are all
called to pray for those who suffer, remembering that Jesus came to heal the
brokenhearted. Men and women facing crisis pregnancies need our prayers and
our resources. They need to know this community of believers will stand
behind them, not condemn them. Tangible support for individuals and couples
with a crisis pregnancy would go a long way in preventing abortions. Knights
of Columbus have been tremendous in sharing their financial resources on
highlighting abortion and the injuries it can produce. More education
materials, conferences, research and promotion on the mental-health risks of
abortion for men and women, though, are needed.”
