These training and information sessions have been developed to answer the many questions posed by those in administrative roles in the Church, especially the question, “Where can we go to learn the right way to do things?”

Issues surrounding Canon Laws, state and federal laws, insurance, legal concerns, responsibilities of lay officers, and finance and pastoral councils, annual reports, audits, internal controls, pension plans (both priest and lay plans), and more, will be discussed.

A sample agenda of a morning session follows this format [of 5 hours]:

I. Registration – 8:00 a.m. – 8:45 a.m.
II. Welcome – 8:45 a.m.
III. Introduction
IV. Structure of Church (Bishop, Priests, Councils, etc…)
V. Introduction of Staff & Responsibilities
VI. Chancellor – Required annual reports -- when due and how used
VII. Responsibilities of Parish Finance Council Members
VIII. Responsibilities of Parish Lay Officers/Cemetery Lay Officers
IX. Required Procedures and Fiscal Policies
X. Finance Office: Federal, State & County Reporting Requirements
XI. Stewardship and Development Needs and Responsibilities
XII. Question and Answer
XIII. Conclude at 12:00 p.m. with a light meal

The Parish Leadership Workshops will be held in four (4) locations in 2010. Persons required to attend may choose which location to attend; hence, conflicts with dates can be resolved by attending a different session. Locations and dates will rotate each year to accommodate different areas of the diocese.

The cost to attend covers the materials, snacks and drinks, a light meal following the session, and other expenses. Participants are asked to pre-register for their preferred location by returning the registration form at least 5 days before the session, along with the $10 per person registration fee, so enough materials will be available for the participants/attendees and provide a count for the meal. (The $10 fee helps defray the costs.) This fee should be considered a continuing education cost and paid by the location (e.g. parish).

Who Should Attend?

The Diocese of Fargo recognizes the sacrifice of time for those involved in leadership positions. This sacrifice extends to the need to be informed about the rules and guidelines that exist to fulfill the leadership roles. There is no good time to hold a meeting. It is hoped that having several options to choose from will allow these vital leadership staff and volunteers the flexibility needed for the sacrifice they are undertaking.

Attendance by persons in leadership and/or administrative positions is based upon the following protocol:
